1. A big Christmas thankyou to you all!

As we come to the end of the year, we'd like to say THANKYOU for entrusting us with your pet's care. Pets are our passion and we really appreciate the opportunity to help.

If you need us over the Christmas and New Year period please call the clinic. We will be closed Christmas Day 25th December, Boxing Day 26th December and New Years Day 1st January. Our normal opening hours apply to all other days.  If we are closed please call the clinic and refer to the message for emergency contacts.

Pets are just wonderful at this time of year. It's not called the silly season for nothing and the frenetic last minute organising often leaves us stressed and worn out. The best stress buster in the world is to be greeted at home by your best mate. You can feel the tension dropping away as the eyes say, "How are you? I've missed you. Come in, put your feet up and relax".

As a way of saying thanks to you, we're running a fun competition about how pets help with stress: there are some great prizes to be won. Tell us how your pet helps you beat stress and we'll put you into the draw to win double passes to Village Cinemas, including Gold Class. Just the ticket for a relaxing night out. 2. Meagan’s having a baby and Kaia joins the Aquadog team !

This month we'd like to officially welcome Kaia Panitz to our Aquadog team !  Kaia started working with The Vets as our professional groomer's assistant. So its no suprise that Kaia is an expert with the Hydrobath.  With her love of dogs, water, and having fun she is really excited about her new role at Aquadog.  Kaia's furry family includes 2 dogs, 3 horses and 4 guinea pigs.  They all love to swim and the guinea pigs even have their own little pool and swim session with Kaia every Saturday afternoon.  In her spare time Kaia loves to compete with her horses at shows and go camping and 4 wheel driving with her family especially her new dog Diesel. Kaia told us the best thing about her work is being with animals and making new friends.

Kaia will now be on hand to teach you and your dogs the benefits of swimming as Meagan, our Aquadog manager and valued team member takes a break to begin a new role as a parent. Meagan & her partner Rowan are expecting their first child in December/January.   We wish her all the very best and promise to keep you up to date with all her news! Wouldn't you know it they are planning a water birth!!

The pic at left shows Kaia introducing her new dog Diesel to the love of water and the fun & fitness of swimming at Aquadog.

3. What to do with all this chocolate?

To help celebrate Christmas this year, we have some great treats and toys for the special friend in your life. There are chew toys, nutritious pet snacks and fabulous collars and leads; just to name a few. All the products we stock are chosen because they are fun, functional and safe. Drop in and choose something for your pet.

For a safe Christmas, here are some things to watch out for:
• Chocolate – it's poisonous for pets, so you'll have to eat it all yourself!
• Ribbon – present wrappings can cause gut blockages if swallowed. Especially watch puppies.
• Christmas ornaments and lights – cats, in their quest to explore anything new, may chew or swallow these. Watch rabbits carefully; they will chew electrical or phone cords
• Fatty Foods – can lead to vomiting and the risk of the very serious disease, pancreatitis. Be especially careful of well meaning relatives who love to feed your pets under the table
• Cooked bones – provide no teeth cleaning value and may cause gut blockages; an emergency situation
• Onions, macadamias, grapes and sultanas are all toxic. These are often found in foods you make at Christmas so beware of feeding leftovers.

4. Zoom in for a Groom - this busy silly season

We're celebrating Healthy Skin & Coats this month with an invigorating & rejuvenating Festive Summer Refresher.
The Vets at Nerang and Helensvale, is a great place for your pet to cool off, freshen up and get a stylish new look for summer.  Our professional pet stylist, Lisa has something special for someone special this Festive Summer Season.  It's the Complete Christmas Makeover for your pet.

The ultimate Christmas treat for your pet including a full body clip and style cut, invigorating hydrobath, brush and blow dry, pedicure, ear clean, and all over skin check.

So help your pets shed that unnecessary coat for some great carefree summer days of play.  We recommend full clips for long haired pets in summer. It allows heat to escape more easily leaving pets feeling more comfortable. It also removes mats that pinch the skin and can trap foreign bodies such as grass seeds.

6. Three wise pets - a Christmas story

I was outside gardening one day with my three dogs: Minny, a Pomeranian cross, Delilah, an Australian terrier, and Sylvie, a Jack Russell. Being blind, Delilah walks quite cautiously around the home, and it was no surprise when she walked slowly round the yard before deciding to walk up towards the house.

As she headed towards the veranda doorway it looked as if she was going to collide with the door frame. Before I could say anything, Sylvie whizzed up and placed herself between the wooden door frame and Delilah, providing something soft for Delilah to bump into. She stayed there until Delilah had passed safely through the doorway. I stood there amazed at this unexpected act of kindness and gave Sylvie a yummy treat soon after!

7. Feeding pups and kittens – why it’s so important

As with children, you want a new pup or kitten to have the best start in life possible. A cornerstone to this is the diet; feed them well and they will grow to be strong, healthy and vibrant. Our knowledge of what pups and kittens need has come a long way. We're now able to avoid diseases such as Ricketts that plagued poorly fed pets in the old days.

The best way to feed a new pup or kitten is to feed a premium dry food. These foods contain the best ingredients in the correct balance. All the nutrients needed are included, removing the need for messy home cooking or adding extra minerals. Adding to this, premium foods now cater for the varying requirements of different sized pets.

A good example is large breed dogs such as Great Danes and Labradors which are more than 25kg when adult. They need a food that will provide all the nutrients they need but allow them to grow at the correct rate. If they grow too fast, they can end up with bone and joint damage that can affect them for life. Feed them a large breed premium food, however, and they'll grow at their natural rate, reaching their full size as strong and healthy adults.

We will help you choose the right food for your pup or kitten. We stock a range that covers all sizes and breeds.

8. Make a splash this summer

With summer just round the corner, it's time to think of how to keep cool and have fun in the hot weather. Ensure fresh water is available at all times [having 2 bowls is a good idea], there's plenty of shade from the glaring sun and apply pet sunscreen on any exposed pink skin. Gone are the days of playing in the sprinkler but here are some great water games to keep your pet cool in the summer heat:

• Kongsicles - Kongs with peanut butter blocking the small end then filled with chicken stock and frozen. A doggy version of the icy pole. For more recipes go to Kong or come up with your own creations
• Water gun fetch - for those dogs that like to chase water, make them chase the water gun spray. Fun for all the family!
• Cool Kong: a floating version of the original Kong; ideal for retrieving from water
• Slippery Brick: half fill a small ice-cream container with water and freeze. When frozen put a tasty treat on top and fill the remaining space with water and freeze again – now you've got a giant flavoured ice block that is heaps of fun to chase, chew and lick. To watch a short video of how much fun this is click here [1.08MB]
• Wading pool: many dogs love to paddle in shallow water on a hot day. Encourage this by putting cut up raw vegies or favourite toys in the pool

Get in the Swim for Summer !...... at our AquaDog Health & Fitness Centre. About five hundred dogs every month now visit our AquaDog centre because it really is a fun, safe place to swim, cool off and stay fit this summer.  The heated pool and temperature controlled environment makes it safe for teaching water safety for puppies as young as 10-12 wk.  The proven fitness and therapeutic benefits for heart, muscles and joints are terrific for dogs of all ages.

9. Aqua Dog swimmer of the month

Sophie Nolan-Crabtree is not one of your ordinary Aquadog swimmers.  This one year poodle cross first came to Aquadog for hydrotherapy on her hip joints.  Not necessarily a willing participant, she was started on laps with a vest on to build up her muscles and fitness.  Whilst it is still great therapy Sophie swims at Aquadog every week now just for the fun of it! She just can't wait to make a splash and leap into the pool.  She swims lead free and loves to dive in from the side and fetch her toys.  Sophie has come such a long way, you wouldn't know she had any hip joint problems and you certainly wouldn't guess her Aquadog experience began with just a little apprehension.
