2. Deadly ticks

Whether you live in a tick infested area or plan to travel with your pet to these regions, you must protect against the potentially deadly paralysis tick.

The paralysis tick hangs out along the east coast of Australia, predominantly Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Once the tick attaches at a suitable site it engorges with blood, injecting a toxin leading to muscle paralysis.

Paralysis starts in the hind legs and moves up the body. Death is likely if the muscles that enable your pet to breathe are affected. Look out for:

  • weakness, especially in the hind legs
  • difficulty breathing
  • drooling, coughing or gagging

In tick infested areas, regular prevention is the key. If you are planning to travel to a high risk area, treatment during this time is needed. Daily tick searches concentrating on hidden areas such as under the arms and in between the paws are also recommended.

Ask us for more information.

There is now a great spot on product available for dogs. Advantix works by repelling ticks so they drop off and die before they have a chance to attach. Advantix is a product specifically designed for dogs and cannot be used on cats. For more information go to www.advantix.com.au

3. Share hugs, not bugs!

Do you share your couch with your pet? Or perhaps your bed? Many people do and it's all part of having pets as members of the family. We encourage living close to pets - there are so many benefits. At the same time, it's important to ensure your pets are up to date with intestinal worm and flea control. This is for the benefit of their health but also yours - pets can pass some of these illnesses onto people. Here's a list:

Roundworm -
migrating larvae of this worm can cause damage to the eye - especially in children, leading in some cases to blindness

Hookworm -
migrating larvae can cause a dermatitis known as 'summer eczema' as they burrow through skin. Affected areas include feet, hands, bottom and legs

Tapeworm - hydatids are a tapeworm, usually found where dogs interact with sheep. Hydatid cysts are dangerous and can only be removed with surgery

Keeping your pets free of these parasites with the appropriate oral or topical preparation is the best way to keep your whole family safe. We know it's easy to forget to regularly worm your pet throughout the year, but because worming treatments only kill the worms in your pet at the time of dosing and do not act like a vaccine, it is vital to keep up a regular worming routine.

SEPTEMBER IS WORM MONTH...SAVE 25% on DRONTAL ALLWORMER....BUY 4 GET ONE FREE

Worm Month is devoted to reminding you about the importance of worming all year round to give your pets the best healthcare and protection for the whole family. We know that worming your pets with tablets can be frustrating, difficult and downright painful. It puts you and your pet through unnecessary stress and discomfort. That's why we can now offer you the latest breakthroughs in stress free worming for your pets. Modern worming treatments are extremely effective and easy to apply - so easy, you can even administer them at home. Come and visit the practice now to hear more about the stress-free ways to protect your entire family from the dangers of worms and talk to us about a solution that suits your family and pets best.

Your chance to WIN $10,000...when YOUR PET LOSES FLEAS TICKS AND WORMS with Bayer products. For more information go to www.bayeranimal.com.au

4. What a Team

Congratulations to The Vets Touch Footy team. Our champion team finished the season getting all the way to the semi finals. An outstanding team effort for our first season, especially considering for many of our players it was the first time playing the game. I think everyone will agree not only was it fun fitness and challenging to learn the rules and skills of the game but also an excellent team building experience on and off the field for our veterinary team.  Where to now? The sky's the limit. It has been so much fun that The Vets team are now looking to play the summer season! Go The Vets!!

Cupcakes Day for RSPCA:
Our great team spirit was on fire recently when our Helensvale and Nerang practices got involved in the Biggest Bake off in the Southern Hemisphere to support the thousands of animals that the RSPCA care for. Monday 17
th August was the official national Cupcake Day for RSPCA and some of our team decided to bake up a storm and descend on our clinics with batches of yummy creative animal themed homemade cupcakes to sell. Nothing was burnt but our vet team and customers were really firing to get their hands on the cupcakes. Both clinics were sold out by lunchtime and at times the scramble to buy and eat the tasty little animal treats could have been seen to resemble one of our touch footy games! We raised over $150 dollars for RSPCA and next year with more bakers involved we plan to ice that total and add hundreds and thousands. A big thanks to our team's family and friends for baking and decorating especially Aunty Jo, Samantha, Ben and Mckeira.

What a Day for Weddings:
On the 4th of July love was really in the air for our veterinary team with two weddings on the same day. Thankfully, unlike the movie Bride Wars, there was no conflict with the same venue choice for Fiona and Lisa.

Dr Fiona married her partner Giles (pictured at left) in a mountain top garden ceremony at Pavillion Gardens, Mt Tamborine and Lisa our Nerang admin nurse chose a water front setting, marrying her partner Adam at Currumbin RSL over looking Currumbin estuary. Both brides enjoyed fabulous weather and a truly special day shared with family and friends, many travelling long distances to attend. Both our newly weds have now returned from their honeymoons with some great photographic memories of their special day to share with the team. Welcome back Mrs Fiona Walker (still to be known as Dr Fiona McKay) and Mrs Lisa Bilson (nee Wilkins)
