3. Is your pup or kitten getting the right start to life?

From conception, the nutrition a pup or kitten receives is what will build his body, grow his brain and develop his immune system. As a result it's vital that the nutrition is of a high quality to ensure the most healthy individual possible. Here are some key nutritional issues:

1. DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): An Omega-3 fatty acid essential for the development of the brain and eyes, DHA is delivered to the unborn foetus via the mother's placenta and once born, in the milk and food. For maximum benefit, DHA needs to be in the food up until 12 months of age.
2. Calcium: is essential for the development of the young body – especially for bone formation. Choose pet foods that have been recommended by us to contain the correct levels of calcium. Importantly, do not supplement this element. As is the case when calcium levels are too low, excess calcium can cause severe bone deformities in pups and kittens.
3. Body weight: keeping your pup or kitten at the optimum body weight from day one and helping them avoid becoming overweight can help them live longer. Fat cells laid down as youngsters will influence their adult weight and it's been shown that overweight dogs live shorter lives. A good reason to keep them trim.

Hill's* Science Diet* premium brand pet food have a range of puppy and kitten foods designed for the specific requirements of young animals. For more information click here

4. Summer's Christmas adventure

Summer, a beautiful Border Collie, had a scary adventure last Christmas. It happened during the family Christmas lunch. At the end of the day, when everyone else was off having a snooze, her owner noticed Summer vomiting. In the vomit were pieces of bone - she'd got hold of some leftovers.

Fearing that a bone could have become lodged in her intestine, she was rushed to the vet. The examination revealed that she was not a well puppy dog. Because there was a chance bones were still in her intestine, she was hospitalised. She received intravenous fluids and was monitored.

Fortunately, the vomiting subsided with medication and Summer slowly recovered over the next day. She didn't need to go to surgery – the bones passed normally. Summer is on a strict “pet food only” diet now, something we recommend for all pets.

How to make Christmas special and safe for your pet:
· Give gifts of pigs ears, pet biscuits, cat nip scented toys and raw bones. We have an extensive range of delectable treats
· Choose from one of the many mind stimulating toys we stock in the clinic. Kongs and other chew toys are excellent fun and exercise the jaw muscles. To learn how to get the most out of your Kong go to: www.kongcompany.com
· For more ideas see our article "Games for hot days"

5. Games for hot days - watch the video

Keeping pets mentally stimulated during summer is a balance between providing a challenge but not over heating them – especially on hot days. Here are a couple of terrific solutions:

Slippery Brick: half fill a small icecream container with water and freeze. When frozen put a tasty treat on top and fill the remaining space with water and freeze again – now you've got a giant flavoured ice block that is heaps of fun to chase, chew and lick [see images at left]. To watch a short video of how much fun this is click here [1.08MB]

Paddling Pool: A good way to spend time on a hot day is to wade away the hours. Get hold of one of those plastic toddler pools in the shape of a clam shell [with the lid] and encourage a paddle. If your dog is sceptical at first, then try enticing him by placing raw vegetables in the pool along with his favourite toys.

In addition, you can make the second half of the clam shell a digging pit. Fill partly with sand and bury treats and favourite toys.
